It can be difficult to find websites that offer free online courses for medical assistants. However, this article lists a few places online where medical assistants can take free courses. Institutions, healthcare agencies, community colleges, and some specialized schools all offer free online medical assistant programs.

You should know that not all of these programs prepare students for careers as medical assistants at the professional level but rather for lower-level positions in healthcare facilities. In fact, if you’re interested in working as a medical assistant, some companies offer free online training.

While there is currently no free online medical assistant certification program, there are a number of introductory courses that students interested in the field can take to learn the basics and get a feel for the field. The vast majority of lectures and tutorials are presented in video format, with some also available in text.

Apps for mobile devices are sometimes an additional option. Certificates of completion may be obtained for a fee or at no cost for some courses, but academic credit is not offered. The vast majority of our courses don’t even require registration to access. These options introduce students to the field of medical assisting, but certification requires students to complete more extensive coursework.

There aren’t many options for free online medical assistant training, but the courses highlighted here should get you started in the field. The following courses are not offered for credit nor do they lead to medical assistant certification; however, they can serve as a primer for those considering a career in the field or as a refresher for those already working in the field.

It can be challenging to find quality, cost-free, online training for medical assistants, but the courses provided here might be a good place to start.

Masshier Central Region WorkForce Board

Those who want to learn the skills necessary to work as clinical medical assistants can do so at no cost through this program. There are three weekly class sessions. Includes a 120-hour internship. This is not a fully online program; there will be some in-person sessions that you must attend. Residents of Worcester with a Diploma, HiSET, GED, or equivalent are encouraged to apply.

University of Minnesota

STCC Medical Assistant Program for Eligible Residents

Training to become a medical assistant is provided at no cost by Springfield Technical Community College to residents of Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin counties. You must be underemployed or unemployed and looking to enter the healthcare industry to qualify for this free online medical assistant program. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with immunization records and proof of age.

FVI School of nursing and technology

Students in FVI’s medical assisting program participate in both instructor-led live online instruction and in-person clinical rotations. Students who complete the medical assistant program at either Miami or Miramar are awarded a diploma.

In addition to having the freedom to set their own study hours, students also have the option of applying for and receiving financial aid to cover the costs of their education.

Saint Louis Community College

Saint Louis Community College’s Medical Assisting program is a fast track to a successful career. This is a non-credit course that combines classroom instruction with clinical rotations.

Courses that involve lab work are typically held at either the Corporate College or the Forest Park campus, so the program is delivered in a hybrid format to accommodate this need. Selected applicants will be offered financial support. Students may need to commit to working for the clinical partner for a minimum of two years if they want to receive funding.

SUNY Bronx Educational Opportunity Center

SUNY Bronx Educational Opportunity Center

The SUNY Bronx Educational Opportunity Center provides people with access to free higher education. Those who live in New York and meet the requirements can receive free career training, high school equivalency testing, and much more.

Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. are the registration times for their Medical Assistant program. Participants will also take the TABE exam. They offer a 16-week medical assistant training program.

New York City of Technology

The New York City Institute of Technology provides ESL students with an online medical assisting course. Zoom is used for the online classes, and a login will be sent to registrants three days before the start of the program.

You need to be 18 or older, a citizen of the United States, and a New York resident for at least a year to qualify.

Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED and fewer than 33 college credits.

LaGuardia Community College

Students in LaGuardia Community College’s Certified Clinical Medical Assistant program must complete five courses before sitting for the national certification exam for clinical medical assistants.

The school provides some financial aid to its students and lets them choose the order in which they take their classes. Certified Clinical Medical Assistant Orientation Sessions are also available online for free to interested students.

LifeSpan Health System

LifeSpan Health System

The Lifespan health system’s free medical assistant online program consists of a 720-hour classroom curriculum and a 120-hour internship.

At the end of the course, students will be prepared to take the National CCMA exam and hold an American Heart Association BLS certification.

LaGuardia Community College

Students at LaGuardia Community College can prepare for the national exam for clinical medical assistant certification by completing the five-course Certified Clinical Medical Assistant program.

Students can take their classes in any order they like and receive some financial aid from the school. The Certified Clinical Medical Assistant Orientation Session can be taken online for no cost as well.

Texas A&M International University

Medical assistants can get a head start on their careers and the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam by enrolling in Texas A&M International University’s free online medical assistant program.

Although tuition for this accredited online medical assistant assistant program is not zero, nearly all students (96%) are eligible for some form of financial aid.


Wisc-Online provides some introductory medical assistant courses for free. The human nervous system, skeleton, and muscles are all covered in their classes. Instruction is also provided in drawing blood, performing laboratory tests, and treating wounds. The curriculum also includes office-related instruction, such as seminars on time management, business writing, and the legal aspects of the healthcare industry. Students can work through the lessons at their own pace and there is no need to create an account to do so. These classes cannot be used toward any sort of degree or certification.

Des Moines University

Students interested in becoming medical assistants can take advantage of Des Moines University’s free online medical terminology course, which provides an overview of all the essential terms in the field. The training can be finished in a short amount of time. The course concludes with a quiz, and students are welcome to return at any time to review the material and take the quiz again. In order to receive a participation certificate, students must pay a fee and sign up on the website. A login is not required if a completion certificate is not required.

University of Washington

The University of Washington’s medical school provides a free online resource for learning how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on adults, children, and even some animals. Learning guides are also available for assisting people who are choking. There are both written and video tutorials available for your convenience.
